Our center is dedicated to preserving the heritage of printing and paper arts, and our ESK volunteer program is an opportunity for international volunteers to discover and experience Estonian culture and art. Your main task as a mentor is to be there for the foreign volunteer.
A mentor can be seen as a trusted support person for the volunteer – someone who helps them to better navigate local life and adapt to their new environment. However, the role of the mentor is largely shaped in collaboration with the volunteer and the organization, based on the expectations and needs of each person.
What skills/resources are expected from the voulunteers?
Your role as a mentor is to provide support and guidance to foreign volunteers during their 10-12 month period. You can help them adapt to the new environment, get to know the local culture and customs, and create new friendships. Often, just listening, encouraging, and pointing them in the right direction is enough. The most important thing is to create the feeling that the volunteer is not alone in this experience and that they always have someone to turn to.
Previous volunteer experience or participation in an ESK program is also a plus, but it is certainly not a decisive aspect.
The mentor should definitely know Estonian and English!
